Recycle a Soda Bottle into a Coin Purse

Did you know that 80% of plastic bottles aren’t recycled? What to do with those landfill hogs? Green Upgrader posted this adorable coin purse made from two recycled 20 oz. soda bottles. They also give additional soda bottle crafting suggestions – cut bottle lengthwise for a clutch, anyone?  [download instructions here] [PET bottle purse FB page] [via best of diy] [designed by]

Bejewel a Candle Holder

I love the look of this bejeweled candle holder made by Lisa from East Coast Bungalow. She covered an old highball glass with some plastic gems she found at the dollar store. I love the color of the gems! I think the effect is pretty striking. This would be a great technique to use on a vase (you could use a narrow water glass), or …

Sew a Hamster Cozy From Scarves

This is Fred the Hamster. Isn’t he cute? I sewed him a custom hamster cozy using two different dollar store scarves (for a swap on Craftster).  Sewing a hamster cozy is pretty simple, and using scarves for fabric makes it even simpler!

Since the project was simple and I wanted to make it special for Fred, I embroidered his name on the cozy with my sewing …

Make Quick Cafe Curtains With Tea Towels

My friend Susan Beal from West Coast Crafty made some adorable cafe-style curtains for her apartment using some pretty tea towels. She also embellished them with buttons to add some crafty charm. This project is a super easy way to update your kitchen or dining area. Non-sewers, don’t be alarmed, the sewing is minimal and simple (you can sew a straight line, right?). Check the …

Upcycle an Egg Carton into a Pendant Lamp

This cool pendant light was made using a common recycling item: egg cartons! We buy eggs by the 5 dozen and we have so many of these purple egg cartons. I am excited to try this project out!
The inspiration project estimate is a cost of about $30. You can reduce this estimate quite a bit by purchasing many of these supplies at the dollar store. …

Make a Kiddie Apron from a Place Mat

Anna Sophia from Our Daily Chocolate made this apron for her daughter out of a cute place mat. Genius! The dollar store frequently has very cute place mats, and this idea is simple and quick. File this one for next time you need a quick gift for a birthday party but need to stick to a budget! Or, make a bunch of them for a …

Cheap and Hip Ceramic Makeover

Sarahrae posted this great idea awhile back on Apartment Therapy: paint over cheesy knick knacks to create hip and modern pops of color in your decor. A monochromatic color scheme makes even the junkiest ceramic figurine look like it came from your favorite hipster shopping outlet. I love these ceramic busts of composers painted orange-red. And when you get sick of the color, repaint!
I saw …

De-Skid a Slippery Rug

MaryContrary was inspired by another post on Dollar Store Crafts to de-skid a handmade crocheted rug with a shelf liner. Mary took the rug she crocheted (isn’t it cool?) and attached the non-stick shelf liner to the bottom. The shelf liner works well to keep the otherwise slippery rug from sliding all over the place!

It looks great! You can use that shelf liner stuff for …
