Make Stamped Tile Coasters

Reader and very crafty lady Songbirdtiff is working her way through the months with twelve great projects to make for Christmas gifts on her blog 12 Months of Christmas. I love these coasters she made by rubber stamping some terra cotta tiles from her local home improvement store. This project is the epitome of what I look for in a dollar store craft: simple materials and techniques that come together to make a WOW project! [link to project]

Tiff found the tiles at her local home improvement store for $.32 each! Home improvement stores are another great source for raw materials to use in crafting. I know I always leave those stores inspired (but drained, because they're such huge stores!). The other components of the project are rubber stamps (you might have some on hand, and they also sell them at the dollar store, or check eBay for people who are clearing out their personal stashes), ink pad, and round felt stickers to put on the bottom to keep the tile from scratching the surfaces they're supposed to protect.

Project Estimate:

  • Tiles, $.32 each
  • Package of round felt stickers, $1 (56 pieces)
  • Stamp, $1 or on hand
  • Ink pad, $1 or on hand

Total cost: $.32 and up

I’m thinking this would require special ink, no? Perhaps that Stayz-on brand? I’m guessing the ink from a $1 ink pad would rub off the coaster.

Yeah, permanent ink would probably be a good idea!

What a gorgeous stamp! I have done this and the tiles turned out beautifully. I’ve also used colored Sharpies to color in the images. :)

I have made many coasters. You really need to use StazOn ink pads, so it won’t come off w/ the condensation from your glass. You can color them in with Sharpie markers or use a glue that dries shiny mixed w/ reinker for regular ink pads. You also should spray a Krylon sealer on it to protect the artwork.
Mine look good 3-4 yrs. later, but my dad uses a lot of ice and the pics are wearing off on his.
