I made a couple and played with paper types and the length/width of the strips. I agree paper is more forgiving then cardboard. Cardstock was a good middle ground.
Longer strips make a wider star.

I just made a few of these using regular computer paper and hung them from the chandelier! I first tried it with index cards but found that the paper is a little more “forgiving”. I made one the full length of the paper and two using half length.
