I have also seen this craft with a slightly messier twist:

Use markers to color on the coffee filters. Take them outside and have the child use a spray bottle filled with water to moisten the filters, causing the marker colors to bleed and blend together. You can hang them to dry or lay them flat, on a stack of paper towels or cloth. When they are dry, fold and create the butterfly using the clothespin as the body. 

It really isn&#039;t THAT messy (you could even do it inside with the filters already on the towels.) Using the spray bottle just gives another opportunity for the kids to strengthen their hands and fingers while having fun.
