Aww, so cute. Reader Jean submitted this project idea at the Dollar Store Crafts Facebook page; it’s a romantic book of “52 things I love about you” to give to your sweetie, out of a deck of cards and some binder rings. Cute idea by Kelly at Trans-craftinental, and so simple and customizable! Look beyond Valentines’ Day for this project as well; it would make a great personal gift for any occasion, or you could just use this idea to make an adorable mini scrapbook or tiny book filled with anything you want. Definitely keep this one in mind for Mother’s Day, too! [click here for how to make a Deck of Cards love book]
Project Estimate:
- Deck of cards, $1 or on hand
- Binder rings, $1 or on hand
- Scrapbook paper, other ephemera, on hand
- Glue, on hand
Total: FREE and up
I don’t know how many of you are familiar with the concept of the “Five Love Languages“* but basically the idea is that every person likes to give and receive love in a preferred format, most of which are covered by the Five Love Languages, which are:
- Physical touch
- Acts of service
- Quality time
- Words of Affirmation
- Gifts
Making this would cover a few of the love languages (gifts and words of affirmation), so if your sweetie loves compliments or gifts, think about making this one for him/her.
*I know it’s kind of random to throw this in here, but I am a big fan of personality profiles (like the Myers-Briggs!) and knowing my love language (and my loved ones’ languages) has really helped me out in everyday life! It even helps me interact with friends and co-workers. I liked the Five Love Languages of Children book the most (even before I had children) because it helped me understand the languages on a basic non-romantic level, although there are a couple other versions of the book, too.

This is brilliant! Especially because I have about a hundred unused decks of cards lying around. (OK, maybe not a hundred, but I do have several!)

This could be extra-cute with those shaped card decks I saw the other day at Dollar Tree. (I think they were heart-shaped.) Thanks for sharing another wonderful idea!!

I just found your blog via Apartment Therapy’s post about their top crafty blogs. So happy to have found you because I love the Five Love Languages and believe they work for everyone, I love decks of cards, and my little two-stop-sign town is getting a Dollar General in a few months which has me so excited. To find your blog at the same time as a dollar store arriving = heaven, no?!
amy
Oh yes now I have an awesome v-day present!

I pulled out just the hearts from the deck of cards and made one fantastic 13 page valentine book for my husband. He loved the sweet, silly, romantic sentiments. Thanks for the idea.

I am not the most creative person, but I am trying to be…what are some of the things that are in the book?? Could you show us some ideas??
heather
@amy, check out the original post here (http://transcraftinental.blogspot.com/2008/02/valentine-gift-idea-little-book.html) for some examples of what is inside the book. They are just statements about the recipient printed out on paper, like “Your endless support of my crafty endeavors.”

I want to make this for my boyfriend. We have been together for two years. What size of index cards do you use and what should I put in there? Pls help
heather
@Gabby, just use a deck of playing cards!
Gabby
@Heather , thank you. I really appreciate it. Seems like a unique, creative project I could get done less than a week.
heather
@Gabby, Yeah, it is a great project! You can also incorporate your favorite paper/scrapbooking elements – stickers, etc. Or collage in anything else with Mod Podge. Have fun – this looks like a super-fun project.

am using this idea to make my son a recipe book. What a great idea. One question though, what are the covers made out of & where did you get the letters from?
heather
@kelley, click through the link at the end of the 1st paragraph to get more info about this book.
Kelley
Thank you so much!!! I’m so excited about trying to make this into a “masculine” recipe book for my son…..I’m going to try it with the large print playing cards so I have more room to write the recipes on! Will definitely post the outcome when it’s done!!
Kaitlyn
Great idea! What are some examples of things you would write on the inside?? I want to make this for my boyfriend, we’ve been together for almost two years and I think he would really like it. :)
angela
Do you write the description on the card or to the paper you attach to it?
heather
@angela, either way is fine. whatever you want to do.
