No matter your craft supply of choice, once you amass a large collection there is always the same question: how in the heck am I going to organize all of this stuff? If fabric is your supply vice and you are looking for a way not only to store it but to know exactly what you have on hand at a glance, you will adore this idea from Karen at Sew Many Ways. Her fabric collection now hangs in a file cabinet, tucked neatly away in a so -simple-it’s-brilliant manner. Used file cabinets re one of those items that you can find in almost any thrift store, which also makes this an insanely cheap storage solution! [how to organize your fabric in a file cabinet]
Project estimate:
- File cabinet, on hand or about $5
- File folders, on hand or $1 and up
- Fabric, on hand
Total: Free and up

I love this. I just got two file cabinets for my craft room/office and I was planning on storing my fabric in them. However, I hadn’t considered doing it this way. Brilliant!!

Might work for quilters who buy fat quarters or something, but my closet full of upholstery fabric on rolls, piles of vintage Indian bedspreads and Chinese embroideries, etc. would never fit! (Just saying there are fabric collections and then there are fabric collections!!) ;^)

Ooh! I’ll have to keep this in mind. I’d much rather use my filing cabinet for pretty purposes!
