For DIYers who enjoy the rope-as-jewelry trend going on right now, dollar store jump ropes are a good substitute for utility rope and are the perfect size for simple bracelets.  This bracelet was inspired by one made by Miansai. Miansai bracelets are available from J.Crew and combine simple rope with high-end hand-cast closures in bronze, brass and silver. You can get a similar look with a hardware store snap hook and a few basic knots.  This adjustable bracelet only takes about 10 minutes to make and can be a good project for kids.

Project estimate:

  • Jump rope, $1
  • Clip-style key chain, on hand or $1

Total:  $1 and up

You will need 30 inches of rope and one snap hook keychain. Mine cost 15 cents. (You can upgrade the look of your bracelet with real jewelry closures.)

Tape or lightly burn the ends of the rope to prevent fraying.

Pull about 10 inches of rope through the snap hook. Then loop the rope two or three times and pull through the center of the loops as shown below.

Pull the knot tight.

Pull about 10 inches of the other end of the rope through the snap hook.

Then tie the same knot.

Trim the ends of the rope and lightly burn or glue the ends to prevent fraying.

Now make some more in different colors since this one was so easy!
