Strapped for cash but want to brighten up your patio or living space with potted plants? Create your own spots of color with recycled cans painted in pretty shades. You can plant seeds (found at the dollar store), or spring for more instant gratification by buying landscapers flats of flowers at your local garden store. This project is by Le Frufru, which is in Italian, but you will easily get the idea by checking out the photos (or translate with Google translate). [how to make painted recycled can planters]
I have a lot of half-bottles of acrylic paint, so I’m looking forward to using them up this way! This project would be a great one for kids – have them paint the cans (tape over the sharp edges if there are any). They’d make cute teacher or grandparent gifts.
Project Estimate:
- Recycled cans, on hand
- Acrylic paint, on hand or $1 each
- Hammer and nail, on hand
- Potting soil, on hand or $1 and up
- Seeds or plants, $1 and up
Total: $2 and up

are you sure it’s acrylic paint? Wouldn’t it just come off if water got on it- which around a plant is very likely to happen?

@neeka, Acrylic paint is water-based but once it dries, it is more or less permanent. Water won’t just wash it away. To protect it from the elements, you can add a sealer such as polyurethane.
