I like this! I do the same thing with natural raffia to make a small piece of (almost) any color I’d like. This is GREAT when you only need a small piece, like for a “string” bow, and don’t want to buy an enormous bunch!
It’s not really the cost as you get a LOT of raffia for a LITTLE out-put. It’s the storage issue for me!
Simply place the natural raffia on several paper towels doubled over, then run a permanent marker over the raffia until the shade you want appears. It will dry a little lighter. It is always easier to go darker and nigh impossible to go lighter. If needed (and I have seldom had to as the marker goes through the raffia) repeat on the other side.
Experiment with variegated or multi-colored effects. After all, this is “dirt cheap”!

Oh I LOVE this! I used baker’s twine in the gift wrapping workshops I did last year and it looked so…what can I say…wholesome?? It goes so well with brown paper too. But I adore all the colours it’s a whole fresh approach and I’m going to try it…RIGHT NOW!!!
