As a craft supply hoarder, I can attest that buying supplies can get expensive, especially if you need specific items for a project and don’t have time to shop around for the best price. Birgit from Birgit’s Daily Bytes decided to experiment with a few different DIY methods for making supplies to cut her crafty costs, particularly projects that she could use for art journaling. Her discoveries include a novel way to make your own spray inks! Paper crafters rejoice! [how to make your own alcohol inks]
Project estimate:
- Kool-aid, on hand or about $0.10 and up
- Rubbing alcohol, on hand or $1
- Spray bottle, on hand or $1
Total: Free and up
Note: The post also includes several other projects, including a recipe for making your own Mod Podge. We strongly suggest that you do not make your own Mod Podge; here is why.

Oh gosh, I can see making the coolest clothes with these! You could pretty much lay any object on a shirt, and then spray on/around it to get an outline of it.

Am I right in thinking that Kool Aid is probably not a good ingredient to use on anything you are planning on keeping for a long time, like a scrapbook? It seems like you’d get roaches and ants eating the pages. I’d appreciate any insights!

I am sure they are using NON sweetened koolaid. If there isn’t a sweetener involved then I do not see roaches or ants as an issue.

Yes, this project uses the unsweetened Kool aid packets (the ones that cost 10 cents or 25 cents at the grocery store).

Instead of KoolAid, what about shavings from water color paints or chalk pastels?

I’ve had great results making my own from food coloring and acrylic paints. See here: http://gsgreatescaper.blogspot.com/2014/09/alcohol-ink.html
for complete instructions.
