This post brought to you by Walmart. All opinions are 100% mine.
I love school supply shopping–there’s just something about fresh, new supplies that gets you excited for going back to school. I don’t have to go to school this year, but I’m definitely looking forward to my kids’ return to class in September! To prepare for back to school, I’m personalizing some of my son’s school supplies. With some help from Duck Tape®, I jazzed up an ordinary plastic pencil case. Now I know my son won’t lose track of his pencil box!
Project Materials:
- Pencil box, $1
- Roll of decorative Duck Tape®, $3 and up
- Scissors and craft knife, on hand
Total: $4 and up
You might already have Duck Tape® on hand (I know I do… I can’t leave Walmart without picking up a new Duck Tape® design), so you might be able to do this project for about $1!
I checked the Back to School Duck Tape® section at Walmart, and I had to have this “Dill with It” Duck Tape® to play with. You can always find Duck Tape® in the hardware and craft sections at Walmart, too. They have so many cool colors and designs, there’s something for everyone. You can always buy Duck Tape at Walmart!
Back to School Duck Tape® Craft: Cover a Pencil Box with Duck Tape®
This is a quick and simple Duck Tape® craft – it will take you about fifteen minutes, and is recommended for ages 10 and up.
Step 1: Separate the two pieces of the pencil box, sliding the inner box gently out from the outer sleeve.
Step 2: Cut strips of Duck Tape® about 1″ longer than the length of the pencil box. Place the first strip across the pencil box carefully, as straight as you can.
Step 3: Cut a small slit in the Duck Tape®, at the corner of the pencil case. Fold tab over the edge of the pencil case. Smooth down other side of Duck Tape® and fold tab over edge of pencil case.
Step 4: Place a strip of Duck Tape® over the side of the pencil box with the snap. Gently cut around the snap with a craft knife, and remove the resulting circle of tape. Smooth tape down around the snap.
Step 5: Finish covering pencil box with Duck Tape®, keeping tape as straight and flat as you can.
Step 6: When you’re done covering pencil box with Duck Tape®, replace inner box of pencil box.
Don’t forget to check out my other Duck Tape® craft projects!

I used the duck tape sheets to cover an old legal pad folder. Fixed the places that had started to show wear on the original vinyl covering. Looks better than the plain white with logo that was on it. Now it has many more years of service. Took all my history notes in it. Not is class anymore so will use it for other things now.

My son’s in high school now and doesn’t care about locker decoration or school supplies being cute. However, he does ask for a new white/message board and a mirror for his locker so I could use the duck tape to line the outer edges of each and make it cute to my eyes. :-) Kid grows up and deprives momma of all this fun!
Ana Coral

Making many duck tape journals! This has nothing to do with back to school, but it ties into fall going into winter. Last year a kitty adopted me. He won’t come inside no matter how hard I try. I found the perfect box to put on my covered front porch to keep him warm and dry during the winter snows. It was a large box I could cut a circle in and he was completely covered. The box has been worn and weather beaten and now is getting a complete make over with duck tape – designer duck tape. What better way to insulate and weather proof?
Tina S

I did this for my 3rd grader. We actually bought the “dill with it” duck tape – too funny! We also bought narrower tape in zebra print and leopard print. They turned out super cute!
Carmen

Marti B.
I’d like to put some of the bright pink Duck tape all over my daughter’s pencil and supplies box. They’re so often broken– I think the tape would reinforce the box as well as decorate it!
Beth
I would cover simple plastic bins (straight, shallow rectangular bins) with duck tape, then use the same design duck tape to attach the bins to the inside of my daughters’ lockers. They could put small things in the bins on the doors of their lockers so they didn’t lose them, and they would be securely attached to the door with duck tape so they wouldn’t fall. The bins they have now are magnetic and fall when they close their locker doors.
Marlene
