Dog Outfit Inspired by Project Runway All Stars Dollar Store Challenge

There are a few bloggers out there that are crafting along with Project Runway All Stars, including Erika (and her furry buddy Sebastian) from Sew DoggyStyle. They're taking a four-legged twist on each challenge, starting with the first episode's dollar store challenge. She went to Dollar Tree on a $30 budget and bought all kinds of crazy stuff, then came home and formulated an outfit for Sebastian with her finds. Make Doggy Leg Warmers

This project comes to us from our pet fashion correspondent Erika from Sew DoggyStyle, whose pooches are the best-dressed canines in all of blogland. They're here today to share a dollar store project perfect for colder weather: turning a dollar store scarf into a cozy pair of leg warmers! Not only will they keep your dog's legs toasty on chilly days, but they will also look stylish on walks around the neighborhood!

How to Make Doggy Legwarmers

This scarf I actually got at The Dollar Tree. One Dolla!!! They have a variety of color combos and I think stripes make adorable leg warmers. You can virtually make these leg warmers to fit any sized dog. I made them for my big dog, since leg warmers are kinda for girls... Haha!

I cut the scarf at every six stripes since that seemed like a good height. Cut a total of 4 pieces. For smaller dogs, cut every four stripes...or less.

Serge or zigzag the top and bottom of each piece to keep the threads from unraveling. Then fold each piece in half lengthwise with right sides together and stitch down the sides. For smaller dogs, take in the sides as much as needed. Measure their legs to determine how much needs to be taken in.

Turn each piece right side out and tada!!!

Tutorial: Candy Cane Hat for Dogs or Cats

Make your favorite furbaby a jaunty holiday hat, perfect for caroling with the Dickensian singing group, a special holiday party, or for the big day itself. Our model Sebastian is raising the bar this Holiday with something other than the typical Santa Hat.

Candy Cane Christmas Hat - for Dogs or Cats

by Erika Lindquist, Sew Doggy Style

What you'll need:

A black hat (found this one in the doll section of Joann's - only 99 cents!), $1
Red ribbon, on hand or $1
Green feathers, $1
Red and white chenille stems, on hand or $1
Elastic string, on hand or $1
Stapler, on hand
Hot glue gun and glue, on hand

Total: $2 and up

Supplies: you can find the green feathers in the floral section of your local craft store, or be creative and look for them in unexpected places in the dollar store. I have found feather dusters, dream catchers, and feathered masks and used them for their feathers! If you don't have ribbon, use whatever you have on hand, like a strip of felt or fabric.

To Make It:

1. Measure your dog from one side of chin where ear lays to the other side. Cut two pieces of elastic string and staple them to the bottom of each side of the hat to help secure hat to head.

2. Attach red ribbon around the rim with glue.

3. Attach green feathers on one side of hat with a dab of glue at the stem.

4. Make a mini candy cane by twisting the red and white chenille stems together and bending one end. Trim with wire cutters or scissors if neccessary (DON'T use your good scissors!). The candy cane shown in this picture is for a 3-6 lb chihuhua hat. Luckily Joann's has a few hat sizes to choose from!!

5. Apply candy cane on top of feathers with glue and cover up the stems of the feathers at the same time.

6. Put it on and tilt it to the side!

Halloween Costume for Couples: Make Eggs and Bacon Costumes

I love clever couples costumes. Okay, I love Halloween costumes in general, but I am especially fond of seeing couples whose combined ensembles make me giggle. (One of these years, my hubby and I are going to go as a gorilla and a banana. We've been talking about it for ages now.) Over at Craft, designer Meg Allan Coe came up with a pair of costumes that, with a few props, becomes the breakfast of champions. She shews how to in a great video! Make Your Dog a Halloween Costume: 6 Doggone Funny Ideas

We all love dressing up for Halloween, and many of us don't know what to do for our pets. Costumes for them can be expensive, and many won't fit larger dogs (like my rottie!). Hopefully the pictures and links below will give you some inspiration!

Last year, I went as candy corn, and our rottweiler, Kona, went as a candy corn princess. Everything she's wearing was from the Dollar Tree, or was something I printed out!

But at our house, we don't just dress her up on Halloween. Any day is an excuse to dress her up. Here are a few of her best shots!

Best in Show (Iron Craft Week 13)

The 13th Iron Craft challenge of 2011 was "Best in Show." This challenge was about the animals. We could make a dog sweater, cat toy or feeding dish. For inspiration, we could visit the zoo then make our own animal. Fish. Birds. Lions. Dogs disguised as Lions. Tigers. Bears. What ever suits our fancy. Or go a little crazy and make up our own animal!

Melinda and Rhonda both love their pets, so they decided to make them toys. After all, toys aren't just fun for pets, they provide hours of amusement for owners too!

Rhonda Greene's Submission: Sushi Roll Cat Toy

Rhonda's kitties love to play. The have a ton of toys, but it seems that they can never have enough. (Probably because they are so good at hiding them behind appliances and underneath furniture.) So she made them a felt sushi roll!

Melinda Hileman's Submission: Lucet-Made Cat Toy

Melinda decided to braid Bailey a new toy with a lucet. [See more info and photos]

She also made Bailey a Medical Alert tag with Shrinky Dinks (he has diabetes).

Last year, she made a plastic canvas "No Begging Zone" sign to keep her dog out of the kitchen (it worked!).

Make a Dog Coat

If you are a pet owner, you know how expensive dog and cat clothes can be. Finding a pattern for a dog coat can be difficult. Well, worry no more! Cheap and easy pet clothes tutorial to the rescue! We've come up with instructions to make a cute dog coat that is so easy to sew that you'll be making them for every occasion. All you need is a baby bib and a reusable tote to make this little doggy dress!

How to Make a Dog Coat

You can find the items you need for this dog coat pattern at the dollar store. And, although there is sewing involved, it is very basic. You can even do it with a needle and thread if you want! This project works for small dogs and is perfect for cats, too!

Project Materials:

Baby bib, $1
Reusable tote bag, $1
Sewing stuff, on hand

Total: $2

1. Test-fit the bib's neck around your pet to make sure it fits.

2. Use the straps from the tote as a waist tie. Cut the straps off the tote bag.

3. Sew the straps to the lower sides of the bib.

4. Cut off a strip of the tote to the desired length for the skirt.

5. Ruffle the skirt and fold the ends in. Cut off any extra material or just ruffle it to the exact length of the bottom of the bib. Pin it in place.

6. Sew the good sides of the bib and ruffled strip together. Here's what the inside of the dress looks like.

7. I added the four leaf clover -- it's just a stick on from Joann's dollar aisle. Remove it and replace with an Easter egg in April!
