Tutorial: Tattooed Soaps

28 October 2008 1,941 views 8 Comments

I saw tattooed soaps at Soap Queen (as designed by Johanna) and thought it would be the perfect Dollar Store Decor project to bring to you this week!

If you have temporary tattooed yourself or someone you love, you are fully capable of doing this, and it takes less than five minutes, from gathering the supplies up to completing the soap! Easy!

What you need:

  • A bar of soap (3 for $1 at the DS)
  • Temporary Tattoos ($1 for a bunch)
  • Wet washcloth, paper towel, or sponge

Total Cost: $2 for 3 bars (price goes down the more soap you make, though, because you can get a sheet of multiple tats at the DS)

To make (or follow your temp tattoo directions, if they are different):

  1. Unwrap soap
  2. Place tattoo sticky side down onto soap
  3. Use wettish cloth to completely dampen tattoo paper
  4. For best results, burnish tattoo (use a spoon to rub the paper, paying close attention to tattoo edges, especially if there are any little pieces of the tattoo that stick out from the body of the tattoo)
  5. Using care, apply pressure with your fingers as you slide the tattoo paper across the soap, away from the applied tattoo
  6. Pat dry, and you’re done!

We made this when I was a kid in school. After the decals (in the days before temporary tattoos) we dipped the top in paraffin to seal and protect the decal.

I wanted to do these so badly as soon as I saw this craft! But my Dollar Tree only had one set of temporary tattooes and they were kind of … well, awful.

So I used a rubber stamp with Stayz-On instead! I also had my daughter use permanent marker on hers. They turned out really cute.

But I’m still on the lookout for cool temporary tattooes so I can do this the “right” way. lol.

I looked everywhere for glycerin soap but couldn’t find any. So I tried some small smooth votive candles instead. It works really well too. BTW, I found a pack of 50 tattoos in the checkout line at Walmart. The packs were in a display box. It took me over an hour of looking all over the store to find any. My local dollar stores didn’t have any either.
