Libby from Designing Moms posted this super-cute applique idea for onesies using scraps and buttons. This is a great idea for baby shower or birthday gifts, or even to make for your own kiddos. If you are participating in Make Something Cool Everyday April, this could be today's project for you. Just jazz up some of your kids' current t-shirts--you can even use this technique to cover stains! [project instructions]

The dollar store usually has a baby section, and frequently has many onesies and t-shirts to choose from. Check it out and see if you can find anything!

Project Estimate:

  • Onesie, $1
  • Scrap fabric, on hand
  • Buttons, on hand
  • Sewing stuff, on hand

Total cost: $1

Yay applique! I appliqued a pair of wings onto a thrift store coat once, as seen here: http://corvustristis.livejournal.com/28560.html Fusible interfacing really helps, and if you don’t have the fabric scraps you want the remnants basket at your local fabric store or a few fat quarters are pretty cheap.

If they sell onesies, I wonder if my local dollar store sells t-shirts. I can’t always find the colors I want at the thrift store. (I use them for yarn: http://corvustristis.livejournal.com/32558.html )

Just be sure and sew the buttons on very securely if they’ll be for babies. Don’t want any little ones choking. :)

You’re right! She actually says that in her original tutorial.

    one more thing to add.
I actually got all of the above iron ons at a dollar store, too. (I am always on the hunt for the dollar stores that import from asia… their items are really special…)

also – if you check out the tutorial… you’ll see that I recommend Beacon’s glue – because it makes this whole thing WAY easier!

ps – try bandannas and dishtowels, etc… from dollar stores for decorations and th 99cent stores around me usually carry kids tees.
