I had been searching for a colorful statement necklace and hadn’t found anything close to what I was dreaming of. I decided to take matters into my own hands, my sisters and I are always buying irregular tees from Dollar Tree and I had this periwinkle tee in my stash that was the perfect color… so out came the scissors, thread and my trusty glue gun to make this ruffly bib necklace.
How to Make a Blooming Bib Recycled T-Shirt Necklace
Guest Post by Sophie (Sister #2) from The Sisters 4 Say More is More
Project Estimate:
- T-shirt, $1 or on hand
- 2 sheets of felt, on hand or $.25
- Needle and thread, on hand
- Glue gun and glue sticks, on hand
- Pins, on hand
Total: FREE and up
To Make:
Cut bottom hem off t-shirt. You will use this as the ribbon on the necklace.
Fold the t-shirt in half and cut circles out of it. Because it’s folded, you should get four circles every time you cut. Your circles don’t have to be an exact size, but you can cut them to be about 2″.
Cut some fringe around the edges of your circles.
Cut a bib shape out of felt for your necklace base. I used a bib necklace I already had as a template. If you don’t have one, just cut sort of a half-moon shape out of a piece of felt. Cut two of these, and save one for later.
Arrange stacks of circles on the felt. In the middle of the necklace, I used stacks of eight circles and on the sides I used stacks of four circles. Tack each stack of circles with 2-4 stitches with your needle and thread.
Take the bottom seam from the t-shirt that you saved, and sew it to the sides of the bib to use as the ribbon that you’ll tie around your neck.
Take your second bib-shaped felt and attach it to the back of the necklace with hot glue. This will cover your stitching.
Sophie’s tip: the closer you place your circle stacks to each other the poofier your bib necklace will be… {is poofier even a word?}
When I first wore my necklace it was out to eat Italian food and I downed my Spaghetti a little too quickly… just remember… this is a bib necklace… not an actual bib…

Love it. Big-honkin bib necklaces are always fun but they get a bit weighty…this looks so light and fresh and fun. Great idea!

I loved this idea! I made it in about an hour. I just did it in one color like yours but if I do it again, I’ll probably use two different colored t-shirts and see how it turns out.

I really like this idea, especially for ladies who like a little modesty when wearing low-cut tops – this is perfect to cover cleavage!

Any particular way to stitch the pieces on….for those who made it already any suggestions?
