I’ve been getting a lot of mileage out of some large glass vases I picked up a few months back at Dollar Tree.  I initially bought them for use as simple candle holder centerpieces for my wedding reception.  Then, I filled one with glass bulb ornaments as part of my Christmas table setting.  I’ve been slowly replacing my winter decor with Valentine’s Day decorations, and when I took  down my blue-and-silver centerpiece I decided to give the vase yet another makeover.  I wanted to use things I already had on hand, so I scoured my craft supplies for anything in appropriate colors and got creative with them!

Project estimate:

  • Large vase, $1
  • Red tissue paper, on hand or $1
  • Non-Slip Shelf Liner, $1
  • Ribbon, on hand or $1
  • Mod Podge, on hand
  • Glitter glue, on hand or $1
  • Candle, on hand or $1
  • Candle pedestal, $1

Total: $3 and up

Tear a sheet of red tissue paper into pieces about one inch across.  Spread a thin layer of Mod Podge over a section of the vase and place the tissue paper onto the vase.  Overlap the pieces slightly as you apply them.

Around the edge of the vase, use pieces from the edge of the sheet of tissue paper to keep the line at the edge as straight as possible.  Continue adding tissue paper to the outside of the vase, working in sections, until the entire thing is covered.

Cut a piece of shelf liner that is a little shorter than the height of the jar and just long enough to wrap around the vase.

Fold the piece of shelf liner in half and cut a heart shape in the middle.  Use Mod Podge to adhere the shelf liner to the outside of the vase.

While I was waiting for my Mod Podge to dry, I decided to give it a little sparkle.  Add some glitter glue around the edges of the heart at across the top and bottom of the piece of shelf liner.

Finish it off with a bow made from wire-edged ribbon.

Too add a little more detail, display the vase on top of a candle holder pedestal.  Add a candle and enjoy your pretty new hurricane!
