Make a Designer-Inspired Lantern

Sometimes, it's almost impossible to justify a splurge purchase.  For example, when Krista from While He Was Napping came across an $80 lantern at Crate and Barrel that she loved, she realized that it was the cost of nearly 2 months worth of diapers and just couldn't bring herself to spend that kind of money on it.  Inspired by the lantern's leaded glass design, she set out to replicate the look at a fraction of the cost.  Her version doesn't have a top, but you could always add a decorative post topper to further copycat the C&B lantern; look for them in the decking section of the home improvement store.  [how to make a designer-inspired lantern]

Project estimate:

  • 4 picture frames, $4
  • Spray paint (optional), on hand or $1 and up
  • Glue. on hand
  • Vinyl, on hand or $1 and up

Total:  $4 and up

This is such a great project! Would never have guessed it was picture frames!I can totally see this in red for my back yard and imagine all the different sized to boot!

At home depot, in the treated wood section, they have copper tops that are designed to go on the top of a deck post. If you wanted a top, that might be quick, cheap way of going about it.

Love the idea. But am not crafty, so why the need for the vinyl??

    So very clever

@Becky – The vinyl is for the design on the glass. You definitely don’t need it if you don’t want to put any designs on the glass.

Instead of the vinyl, you could paint on a design or etch the glass. This is a great idea! Thank you for sharing.

Add a mirror from Dollar Tree on the bottom to increase the brightness… http://www.dollartree.com/Mirror-Candleholders-5-/p307985/index.pro
