This is one of those ideas that just came together serendipitously, and I love how these little succulent-filled sleighs turned out. Ever since they started selling faux succulents in the floral department at Dollar Tree I’ve been keeping an eye out for things I could fill with them. Over the course of the summer I kept coming across little sleigh-shaped baskets, and I knew they’d be great for making succulent-y holiday decor!
Project estimate:
- Sleigh basket, $1 and up
- Styrofoam block, $1 and up
- Spanish moss, $1
- Glue, on hand
- Faux succulents, about $3 and up
- Faux berry floral embellishments, $1 and up
- Ribbon (optional), on hand or $1 and up
Total: $6 and up
To form a base for adding the succulents and other floral embellishments, you will need a block of foam. This block of foam was large enough to use for both of my sleigh baskets.
Use a sharp serrated blade to cut the Styrofoam down to size. I used my FloraCraft foam cutter. This will get messy, so cover your work area before you start cutting!
Glue Spanish moss over the foam.
Apply glue to the stems of the succulents and press them into the foam to make your arrangement. Start with bigger succulents first, then fill the spaces between with smaller succulents.
To give an extra holiday touch, I added some bits of faux berry floral sprigs. I found these at Michaels, and while the regular price on them is $1.99 per stem, I got them on sale for $0.59 each! I cut the sprigs into smaller sections, added some glue to the stems, and pressed them into the foam randomly around the succulents
Optionally, embellish the sleigh with a bit of ribbon.
