I came across this cute mini football field idea a couple months ago, and have been hanging onto it to share in time for the Superbowl.  It’s super easy — you just need an astroturf-type rug (my dollar store has them!), some white tape, and some white sticker numbers.  Simple and so fun!  [Here’s where I found it.]

Project Estimate:

  • astroturf mat, $1
  • white tape, on hand
  • number stickers, $2 and up

Total:  $3 and up

Of course I couldn’t stop there; I had to make a cute felt football garland to go with it!  It was really easy and took less than 30 minutes to make.

Project Estimate:

  • brown and white felt, $.35/sheet (I used two sheets of brown and 1/4 sheet of white for a 24-ball garland)
  • sewing machine and thread

Total:  about $1 and up

To start, I simply cut football shapes from brown felt,  and long strips (for stripes) and stitch shapes from white felt.

To attach the stripes on the ends of the footballs, I fed each football through my machine as shown in the photo, attaching the stripes as I went.  (I didn’t do any backstitching.)

Ah, wouldn’t it make the most lovely football necklace?  No?  Okay, cut them apart and trim the stripes.

I then attached the “stitches” and strung the garland all at the same time by feeding the footballs end-to-end through my machine.  I alternated the curve of the stitches on every other football for a little more “football-y” dimension.

Ta-Da!  One football garland, ready to hang!
