Sometimes, the simplest projects have the biggest impact. Such is the case with this fabric wall art sent to us by Shannon of {aka} Design. By stretching sample swatches of fabric around artist canvases, she created easy, eye-catching art for above a doorway. Her tutorial shows how to use basic upholstery techniques to perfectly stretch the fabric around each canvas, creating high-quality custom art pieces in a matter of minutes. [how to make fabric wall art]
Shannon got her sample swatches from Tonic Living for $1 each, but you can also use remnants from other projects, dollar store placemats, or any other fabric you can get your hands on. A couple of years ago, I discovered a great source for free fabric. My best friend’s husband manages a store that sells furniture, and every year with the changing of each company’s lines, the store receives new fabric swatch books. The old, obsolete books were destined for the dumpster until I rescued them! Ask around at local upholstery shops and furniture stores to find a swatch book of your own.
Project Estimate:
- Fabric remnant or swatch, on hand or up to $1
- Artist canvas, $1 and up
Total: $1 and up

Thanks for the instructions. If you’re in the SF Bay area, there’s a group that collects fabric samples destined for the trash and then holds events to give them away to anyone who wants them — http://www.fabmo.org. I’ll have to look for some wall art next time I go!
