Aaaah, it’s summer vacation time once again! If you are fortunate enough to have a swimming pool in your backyard, your house is likely going to be the place to be for the next few months. Sweltering days aren’t good for much physical activity with one major exception: pool parties!
Over at our Facebook page, DSC reader Carole asked us a question about pool parties. She is planning one for her grandson’s fifth birthday, but she’s short on decorating ideas. What are some decorating ideas that would work outdoors and be fitting for a pool party?
I would do a luau theme; Dollar Tree, Oriental Trading Company, and many other places carry a ton of luau-themed decorations that are very budget-friendly. What do you think??

I would do an Under the Sea theme. Sand, seashells, starfish, little fishbowls with under water scenes….

Like Silvia, I like to be unpredictable. LOVE the sea idea!
My first thought was a scene from Africa with all the animals bathing in the waters. Baby pools of sand to play in. (wouldn’t that color the pool water nicely, lol) Then reality kicked in when I thought of the costs of finding/buying inflatable animals.
So on the Dollar Store line, what about Pirates of the Carribean?

I’ve done a RAINBOW theme before and that worked well at the pool, but I don’t think that’s 5-year old boy material. For little boys, I personally like the “SURFER” theme.

I recently did my daughter’s 2 year old birthday party out by our pool. Although we did not have a pool theme, we did many outdoor decorations that were weather-proof, cheap and easy to make.

Little kids birthday party I’d do rubber duckies and frogs. Get foam sheets and cut out lily pad shapes to float in the pool. Green lily pad plates, blue punch with little ducks floating in it, etc. The boys will especially love the frogs and everyone tends to like rubber duckies. Basically pretend the pool is a lake.

If you buy anything from Oriental Trading make sure you have a coupon code! You can find them by Googling – usually free shipping or 10% off!

My sons birthday is in July so every year he has a pool party!! The first year we did primary colors which as you know most beach balls come in so it worked perfectly. The second year we did an african theme. We bought few blow up animals at dollar tree and the rest wer stuffed for decoration and from garage sales. we used leaves and braches from our own yard. The 3rd party was simply water theme, balls, over 100 water balloons, and water guns. Good luck!!!
Party Trays
How about lots of sea-blue lanterns over the pool?
