I’m of the school of artsy thought that believes the messiness quotient of a project is directly proportionate to the amount of fun to be had. The perfect example of this phenomenon is finger painting! While it’s fun as an activity on its own, you can add an extra crafty dimension to finger paints by making your own. Angie from The American Homemaker has a recipe for DIY finger paint that’s a far cry cheaper than store-bought paints, and you probably have everything you need to make it in your pantry already! Project estimate:
- Cornstarch, on hand or $1
- Water, on hand
- Food coloring, on hand or $1
- Small plastic containers, on hand

I always worry about using food coloring for kid crafts – won’t it stain? For me the benefit of knowing something is washable tends to be worth the money. Still, if other mamas have good experiences with this, let me know!

AS long as you have them wear an old shirt or apron so they don’t get paint on things you don’t want stained and have a drop cloth were they are painting helps. Even with paints that claim to be washable sometimes they still stain (proof by my daughters pretty blue sweater that has red stains from a “washable” paint)…
I have made this for my kids and they love it plus it’s super easy!
