I love bringing natural elements into projects. They’re timelessly beautiful, they remind me of my favorite outdoor places, and my favorite part, craft supplies from nature are free! Michelle from Sweet Something Designs is a master of the bringing-the-outdoors-in look, using things like pinecones and acorn caps to create her masterpieces. If you have an oak tree nearby, it will provide you with the fodder you need for this project. I love how a simple, ordinary object like an acorn cap takes on an entirely different and chic look when repeated! [how to make an acorn cap Christmas ornament]

Nifty! Next “mast year” when a zillion acorns fall from our one tree, I have to try this! (Last year I’d have had plenty of supplies — this year not so much.)
Mod Podge Amy
Rhonda, I love it that you always put “Mod Podge, on hand.” Because it’s so true and it means you love me :D

Running out of Podge constitutes a serious emergency around here. Not only is it always on hand, it’s always on hand in both gloss and matte! And of course I love you! :)

These are lovely. One time I made a very similar ornament design out of whole acorns, which was a mistake. I was making and storing them in a room w/ a woodstove til it was gift-giving time… A few days before Christmas I was about to wrap each ornament up when I noticed little worm holes in the acorns….these little inchworm-like worms had been living inside the acorns and had bored their way out in the heat of the room. I found dozens of little worms around the ornament area. It was quite gross, plus I had a lot of acorns to replace, and hope that the same thing didn’t happen w/ those. :) No one ever said anything so hopefully no one noticed. :) Just thought I’d share that for a laugh…..I like the idea of just using caps much better!

Katie regarding the worms-
1.) if you put all the acorns in a big bowl of water the ones that sink should be fine, the ones that float most likely have worms in them! Toss those back outside
2.) Try and get them off the tree before they fall- they won’t have worms.
3.) Also you can bake them on an aluminum foil tray at 200 degrees for an hour- that will kill almost anything in there! Hope that helps. I inspect each one for holes!
