It never fails to amaze me how people come up with projects that look like pieces out of high-end catalogs which start as dollar store finds. While these festive reindeer vases might look like they came from Pottery Barn or West Elm, Cheryl from Sew Can Do actually made them using dollar store glassware and gilding supplies from Martha Stewart! The gilding sheets are a bit pricey, but one package should be enough to make dozens of these vases or other projects – anywhere you want to add a little extra shine. [how to make gilded reindeer vases]
Project estimate:
- Glass vase, on hand or $1
- Paint, on hand or $1 and up
- Stencils, on hand or $1 and up
- Martha Stewart gilding sheets, about $10
- Martha Stewart gilding adhesive, about $7
Total: about $17 and up

These are very nice, but I prefer seeing crafts that were made either all from dollar store items (excepting things like glue), or at least where the additional items were only slightly above a dollar. Adding Martha Stewart products pretty much guarantees the project will be pricey. I have another idea, only it may not be Christmas-y. I have found very nice silver stickers at the dollar store. Ones that I think were meant to be stuck on walls and such. These have dandelions and butterflies and look just as nice as the gold deer and are much cheaper.

@Dreolin, I think of project features like this as inspiration – it’s a cool idea, and if you want to take it to a cheaper place, you can (just like you did in your suggestion!).
You could use gold acrylic paint and get a similar look for about $1 in paint — you’d probably need to cut your own stencil and tape it on first.

Thanks so much for featuring my project. What a nice surprise!
And while this wasn’t created to be an “only dollar store supplies” project, Heather is absolutely right – cheaper items could be swapped in if desired. It’s all about getting creative with what you have on hand or what your budget will allow.
